Bespoke Solid Oak Bookcase
Project Overview
A previous client of ours was on the lookout for a new bookcase to fit into the corner of the kitchen. This new bespoke bookcase is to store all the client’s favourite books and recipes and have them to hand when needed. Once we finished fitting the solid oak bookcase, our attention turned to the radiator cover.
Design and Planning
The bookcase didn’t just need to function and fit the kitchen space, it needed to complement the surrounding visuals, and with our client’s home being a converted barn, our expert craftsmen were more than up to the task. We made several home visits to ensure our designs matched all preferences and decided on solid oak, stained and oiled to complement the existing room doors.
Key considerations:
- Making the most of an unused space without overcrowding the kitchen.
- Making a visual and functional accompaniment to the room.
- Seasoned prime European oak for a stunning bookcase.
Execution
Once the designs were finalised and everything measured up, we got to work.
- We fixed the bookcase to the wall to give it stability.
- We fitted it over the skirting board with everything levelled to perfection.
- We curved the front edge of the shelves to make sure there was enough space to walk past into the kitchen.
However, once we fitted the bookcase, the client drew our attention turned to the radiator cover in the kitchen. That’s because there was little to no heat coming from the radiator!
We noticed the existing radiator cover was too narrow with the front panel touching the radiator and absorbing the heat, leaving little space for air circulation. Air circulation is very important to achieve efficient heating.
- We crafted a new radiator cover made of oak MDF boards, as solid timber would just shrink and warp due to the forced drying process.
- It was 50mm deeper than the existing cover to allow good air circulation, making it fit for purpose.
Result
Through our expertise and years of experience creating bespoke furniture, the client was given a perfectly fitted bookcase in their kitchen, able to store their favourite recipe books and ornaments, that looks stunning thanks to the oak wood that was stained and oiled to match the kitchen doors.
Their radiator is now also working at optimal efficiency thanks to a newly fitted cover after our team replaced the faulty one.
Aftercare
The clients kitchen had a quartz worktop with a gold fleck. We sourced a new deeper worktop for the radiator cover to match the existing worktop. After fitting everything in place, it was as if the new furniture had always been part of the kitchen , as everything looks like it was an integral part!
Conclusion
With this client, we went in with just one project to complete – the solid oak bookcase – but we always look out for ways to improve people’s homes even further and offered our expert opinions and services to create a new, bespoke , fresh , comfortable living spacethat works for each individual customer.
